The Bible and Our Bank Account
Why should we care about tithing? Does God need our money? I don’t think so. The reason that God cares about money has nothing to do with His needs, but it does have everything to do with ours!
“So that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always” (Deuteronomy 15:15). God deeply desires for us to find contentment as we realize that He will provide for us (Hebrews 13:5). He wants us to be overflowing with blessings (Proverbs 3:9) as He give us all that we need (2 Corinthians 9:8).
God does not want our money to dwindle away, (Proverbs 13:11) but He also doesn’t want us to fall into the trap of thinking that our money will fulfill us (Ecclesiastes 6:9). Instead, He wants us to thirst for Him and Him alone (Luke 6:21-25). Both an abundance of money, (1 Timothy 6:6) and a lack of it, may distract us from the true Giver of all good things (Matthew 6:31).
The truth is, it is God who gives us the ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18). We are robbing Him if we are not tithing (Malachi 8-10).
If this didn’t convince you of the importance of tithing, you can google the other thousand verses that talk about money and possessions. Or check out Jesus’s parables, 16 out of 38 of them have to do with money or possessions!
