If you take a look at Genesis 2 you will find the details of the creation of man. In the book of Genesis we see that after God had made man, he declared, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable helper for him” (Genesis 2:18).
What do you think of when you hear the word helper? When most people think of the word helper they associated this word with someone who is giving assistance and support to another. For example, someone might help a superior accomplish something. Often the word helper seems synonymous with follower, the opposite of leader.
But I would argue that this is not the case.
If you look at the original Hebrew, you will find that our English word for helper originates from the Hebrew word Ezer. This word Ezer is used 21 times throughout the Bible, and only twice does it refer to a woman’s role in regard to her husband. Often this word Ezer is actually used to describe Yahweh Ezer which in English translates to the Lord our Helper.
Throughout the Old Testament this word Ezer is used to describe our powerful God and His actions in rescuing, protecting, and helping us in our time of need. We NEVER see the Hebrew word for helper ever being used to describe anyone who is of less importance or stature. Please take note of the key phrases: “a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18) & “and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). If the woman was of less value, she would not be suitable, nor would two unequal halves be able to make a whole.
Some Verses with this same Hebrew word include:
“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides across the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘destroy them!”’
“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”
“All you Israelites, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield.
House of Aaron, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield.
You who fear him, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield”
In the passages above, and in the other verses where the word Ezer is used, we see that this word signifies God’s mighty strength, boldness, and love in protecting us.
The woman is the helper. But do not, even for a moment, think that there is not incredible power in the role of the helper. The woman has the great honor of embodying God’s character trait of Ezer. The woman gets to empower and strengthen the man to lead just as the Holy Spirit comes to rescue, encourage, and help us on our time of need.
The role of the helper is incredible and empowering. The role of the helper is simply inspiring.
Women, it is time we recognize the strength of Ezer. May we follow the example of Yahweh Ezer as we boldly stand as woman of God- empowered and strengthened, bold and courageous.
